Saffron Tip

Everything you ever wanted to know about Saffron!

Lets talk about Saffron. Have you ever wondered why saffron was so expensive? It is the most expensive spice in the world. It costs ten times or more than vanilla. The reason for its high cost is the labor in producing this wonderful spice. The thread-like stigmas of the saffron crocus weigh so little that it takes over 20,000 to produce only 4oz. The labor costs are tremendous because these are all hand picked. Saffron was more than likely first cultivated in Asia Minor and used by ancient civilizations in foods and as a dye. Later in the seventh century it was used in China as a drug and as a perfume. The Aroma and taste is distinctive, bitter and highly aromatic.
