Stepping into Molly’s Diner reminds me of my high school days. Manager Jamie Grantham’s friendly greeting and the ’60s blue-and-white tile floors and matching booths are a retro blast back to a time of familiar foods and music. Even the walls of Molly’s are covered with posters of all that was great about the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s — Sinatra, The Rat Pack, James Dean and the Beatles, they’re all there. Eating a great breakfast — available all day — while listening to my favorite Beatles’ tune also takes me back.
When you just want to get something to eat (not really knowing what you want), this may be the place. Molly’s offers a menu that covers all the bases. If it’s 6 p.m. and you’re craving breakfast, try one of the specials. The one I enjoyed was a bountiful platter filled with everything good about breakfast — bell peppers, mushrooms, onions, fried potatoes, ham, bacon, sausage and scrambled eggs all topped with sausage gravy and cheese served with toast ($4.95). If your dinner companion is inclined to want typical dinner fare, try one of the many old-fashioned comfort dishes such as the Swiss steak dinner with mashed potatoes and gravy with a side salad ($6.95). Molly’s offers a children’s menu that includes a kids’ cheeseburger with fries ($3.50).
Molly’s Diner was opened in mid-2002 by a group of investors. The diner
was named after one investor’s (Gus Nicolaidis) mother. In January of this year, the group sold Molly’s to Ali Ismail, who carries on the tradition of good home-style cooking at modest prices. Molly’s Diner is one of those neighborhood places where you’ll see familiar faces and welcomed newcomers.
