It’s just a short trip to Waterville from the heart of Toledo, but wait a minute — did I make a wrong turn on Route 475? Somehow, when my party entered Chowders ’N Moor, we were not sure if we were in a small beach café in Key West or the famous Broadway Deli. Tina and Thomas Kuron’s Chowders ’N Moor is adorned with cozy wooden tables, each with different designs referencing the Maumee River, Lake Erie and the Waterville Bait & Tackle Shop. The tables are hand-decorated by Tina’s brother-in-law, Dave Powrozek. Tina’s sister, Shirley, is the manager.
Tina, and her sister come from Michigan, confessing that “cooking is in my blood.” — she had a restaurant/bar before — this is her dream come true. “I wanted to bring good food to Waterville,” she says.
Chowders ’N Moor’s menu hosts a variety of more than 45 sandwiches, such as the steak burger with a choice of toppings, like smoked cheddar cheese combined with a side of house fries sprinkled with herbs and cracked pepper ($7.49). If you are a soup lover like me, Chowders ’N Moor serves soup for the soul with an unbelievable selection of made-from-scratch soups by Tina. My favorite, the white chicken chili, is full of shredded chicken and has just the right seasoning combination ($4.89). If you have a hard time deciding what to order from the list of 45+ sandwiches and up to six different soups, choose the soup sampler. The sampler is a selection of your choice of three soups nicely presented in sampler cups on a garnished platter ($5.89). There is also a build-your-own-sandwich combo with chips, pickle and fountain drink with a half ($3.79) or whole ($6.39) sandwich. Want more choices? Try choosing from more than 15 outstanding salads on the menu. I had to try the starboard salad with mixed greens, smoked chicken, dried cherries, almonds and raspberry vinaigrette ($6.39).
A broad variety of smoothies ($3.79), gourmet coffees ($1.29) and signature drinks — like the seasonal hot witches brew (one of the cappuccino drinks, $2.09) — are also available. For those 12 and under, try the "Lil’ Minnow’s Menu." Oh, don’t forget to save room for desserts like Blue Bunny ice cream in waffle cones ($2.69) and hot fudge brownies ($3.49). Plus, every Wednesday is 99-cent soup day offering six soups. With the cold and gray days of winter ahead, it is nice to know that a tasty remedy is served daily at Chowders ’N Moor.
